About the Housing Authority of The City of Lake Charles
The Housing Authority of The City of Lake Charles (Authority) is a political subdivision of the state of Louisiana, established independently from the City of Lake Charles in 1938 under La. R.S. 40:381, et seq. The Authority's mission is to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities in Lake Charles, Louisiana. |
Governance and Operations
The Authority operates under the governance of a five-member board appointed by the Mayor of the City of Lake Charles, each serving staggered five-year terms. The Authority administers multiple housing programs and owns several housing units that are rented directly to low-income tenants.
Section 8 Program
Since 1976, the Authority has administered the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 8 program. This program provides financial assistance to low-income families to help with their rental payments. It establishes a three-way agreement among the Authority, the Participant/Tenant, and the Owner/Landlord of the housing unit. The Section 8 program includes housing choice voucher units and moderate rehabilitation units.
